Odd though it may sound, the instrument was invented by a Frenchman named
Maurice Martenot. It's electronic and produces single sounds through a
keyboard controlling the frequencies from an oscillator. It's been most
used by French composers including Messiaen, Honneger, Koechlin, Milhaud,
and Boulez. It's the most popular French invention after French bread.
