Depsite the controversy that has accompanied the CD put out by Lara
St. John, a controversy I don't wish to reignite as we discussed this
in a recent thread, I have to admit, her playing of Bach's Chaconne for
unaccompanied violin is simply breath taking. Prior to hearing her version
of it, I was quite partial to Grumiaux version. I still like his complete
set of the sonatas and partitas, but somehow, the chaconne isn't as smooth
as the rest of the pieces. Despite that, I still liked it, but after
hearing St.John's version of it, I'm having a tougher time with Grumiaux.
What's interesting is that I heard St.John perform it live on CBC once,
and it wasn't nearly as good as the recording. I guess technology ca do
wonders. ;-)
