I'll answer that on a strictly personal level. It's the use of multiple
styles within one "musical snapshot." The snapshot could be the entire
work but would generally be of much smaller proportion. For me, what's
important is whether I feel that the multiplicity is naturally based or
based on a pre-determined and independent priority to provide multiple
styles. In the latter case, I end up feeling that I've listened to a work
which is not honest and natural. I get this feeling with most modern works
which are considered by the media as eclectic.
So, I'd have to say that a "real eclectic" work would be one possessing
multiple styles within every musical snapshot. I define the snapshots
for myself - they are internal to my sense of the music.
