Steven Scwartz omits Hugo Wolf from his list of art song composers, which
is fine because he was listing some of his favorites. IMHO Wolf is second
only to Schubert. A good introduction is the Shirai cd of Wolf songs in
orchestrations which I believe, are his own orchestrations. The recital
starts and ends with two different arrangements of the great song from
Wilhelm Meister(Goethe), Kennst du das Land?
Then there is Richard Strauss - not to be omitted! There are the Four Last
Songs, but a lot else- the Ophelia songs, for example- also on a Shirai cd.
