Reports of small hive beetle activity this spring have been mixed. As winter
in Florida drew to a close, few adults could be detected, but later larvae
started appearing again in honey houses. The beetle also began to be spread
around. Infestations in Ohio, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have all been
linked to package bee shipments from the southeast. The insect also has been
reported in Minnesota, where it appears to have overwintered successfully in
1998.
