   The research that J. Jefferson did at the Presidio of Santa Cruz de
Terrenate was in response to the studies of an M.A. student there, Chris
Sugnet, and because he (Dr. Reid) was awarded a small contract by the BLM to
work there. Chris became interested in the site after working and talking with
Jack Williams at the Presidio of Tubac. Jack has done a great deal of the
basic research for the work at Santa Cruz de Terrenate, including a model of
the site which the BLM totes around to all the archaeology fairs it can (like
the one in Arizona recently). And before Jack, it was Charles DiPeso who
actually excavated at Santa Cruz de Terrenate (I'll not call it Terrenate like
the BLM does, because there is another presidio site at Terrenate in Mexico).
  I have a great deal of respect for Dr. Reid, but he is not a historical
archaeologist. Perhaps he is turning to it now, since the field school has
ended at Grasshopper.
