Elgar's the Kingdom, played by Andrew Davis and the BBCSO. Would like
opinions on performance please, if anyone else was there. My own thoughts:
chorus and orchestra excellently conducted by AD. It seemed very similar
in style to the Boult recording I have. Soloists: Soprano excellent (very
good Sun Goeth Down). Contralto good (very nice sound). Tenor was a
bit too tentative for my liking - seemed to be singing to himself a bit.
Bass performed well but was a bit grainy when singing loud. They were:
Hillevi Martinpelto, Catherine Wyn-Rogers, Timothy Robinson and Anthony
Michaels-Moore. I had heard of none of them, though I recognised the
Soprano. Did she sing at the Mahler 8 that was done not too long ago at
the RAH? Altogether though, a good performance, but I think I would take
Boult's over a recording of that one.
