JUDITH LANG ZAIMONT COMPOSITION SELECTED FOR
"THE CENTURY LIST" OF CLASSICAL MUSIC

Judith Lang Zaimont's Doubles for Oboe and Piano has been selected for "The
Century List" published in the June 1999 issue of Chamber Music Magazine.
This prestigious list of 100 works by 100 Twentieth Century composers from
around the world was compiled by Frank J. Oteri to identify "the vital
music of this century" and to stimulate radio broadcasts of music of our
time. Selected for its structural ingenuity and virtuosic writing for both
instruments, Doubles is characterized by Oteri as "a piece that shows off
how beautiful the sound of an oboe is!"

Only 50 works on the list are by American composers, and only 20 of these
are living Americans. In addition to Ms. Zaimont, the distinguished
roster of current composers named to "The Century List" also includes
Michael Torke, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Charles Wuorinen and Philip Glass.
Minneapolis-based Ms. Zaimont is the only Minnesota composer to receive
this accolade.

"The Century List" is described as "100 Reasons to Play This Century's
Music" in the magazine's feature article. Mr. Oteri, a music writer,
commentator and staff member of the American Music Center in New York,
originally prepared "The Century List" for presentation at the 1998 annual
meeting of American Personnel in Public Radio. He intends the list to
serve as a means of integrating this vital music into the regular
broadcasting rotation of radio stations around the country

Doubles was written in 1993 on a commission from oboist Lisa Kozenko, who
premiered the work at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in 1994 and who
performs the piece on Arabesque CD Z6667 - Neon Rhythm - Chamber Music of
Judith Lang Zaimont with pianist Dana Burnett. Support for the commission
came through a grant from the American Composers Forum with funds provided
by the Jerome Foundation. Published by Jeanne, Inc, the work has been
performed throughout the U.S. and Canada and will be performed in London
this coming July at the biennial conference of the International Alliance
of Women in Music.

Judith Lang Zaimont is Professor of Composition at the University of
Minnesota School of Music. In recent months, performances of her music
have included premieres of Elegy for String Orchestra in New York and San
Francisco, a new saxophone quartet, Parallel Play, commissioned by and
premiered at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls as part of a full
evening concert of her music and recordings of her McCollin
Competition-winning Symphony No. 1 and other orchestral music with the
Czech Radio Symphony for Arabesque, and of her choral music with the Choral
Society of Southern California for 4Tay. Other current news includes a
major article on her piano music - All-American Appeal, recently published
in Piano & Keyboard magazine, the release of The Vocal Chamber Art, a CD
collection of her songs for the Leonarda label and the completion of a
large-scale Piano Sonata.
