It was originally dedicated to Napoleon.  Napoleon was a person whom one
could like based upon one's assessment of his enemies, among whom he seemed
to be showing himself the better person.

When Napoleon crowned himself emperor, Beethoven, got disillusioned and
tore up the dedication.
