Thanks for your recommendation but this is supposed to be my first
Zemlinsky CD, not my first ever.  I have all those things suggested -
I like 2 & 3 but cannot get my head around 1 & 4.  Maybe I am missing
something but they sound like a cacophony of big empty gestures (I probably
AM missing something).  I have the Askenazy recordings of them, but I don't
actually like them - they are far too polished and restrained.  I think
Rach should be played with rough edges.  May favourite of Rach 3 recordings
is a cheapo one that came with a magazine:
