I thought list members might like to know that there is a remarkable week
coming up for anybody interested in zarzuela and living in the UK. If you
are at all curious about Spain's major contribution to operatic literature,
this is a very good time to find out more.
First, Placido Domingo appears in a Gala at the Barbican Hall, on Sunday 25
April @ 7:30pm. This will include arias, duets and orchestral preludes by
Sorozabal, Chapi, Soutullo y Vert, Guridi, Torroba, Gimenez and Serrano.
A week later there is an opportunity to hear a wider range of zarzuela
songs, including some in English translation, at the Bloomsbury Theatre on
Sunday May 2nd @ 7:30pm. The singers for this are leading West End musical
singing-actors, and the accompanist is Christopher McManus, the Royal Opera
House Covent Garden repetiteur and conductor. Program notes include a
specially written article by Andrew Lamb, the leading British music critic
and zarzuelist.
The programme will include songs, duets and quartets by Barbieri, Chueca,
Gimenez, Lleo, Breton, Vives, Caballero and Torroba - as well as a wide
selection of music by Sorozabal.
You can find biographical articles on all these composers on the
