If you're a small enough minority you really don't.  I had a
Japanese-American friend from Hawaii who had difficulty finding work
as an English professor, well beyond even the 1500 applicants to a job
standard of those days, and he said that he couldn't even get a boost from
affirmative action guidelines--which didn't recognize him.  He went around
Manhattan, concealing himself from the muggers under a ratty old raincoat.
Unfortunately died young.
