I would have said that about Zemlinsky until last week when I heard the
Kansas City Symphony play the first movement of Die Seejungfrau [the full
materials for all three movements didn't arrive in time from Europe] and
was swept away. It was conducted, btw, by Schwartzo's resident conductor
- the conductor of the Louisiana Philharmonic in his hometown of New
Orleans - Klauspeter Seibel, whom I went to hear on Steve's recommendation.
I do agree about Schmidt, though; his symphonies are wonderful, and the
Book of the Seven Seals, whichever version - but most particularly that
by Mitropoulos - is nonpareil.
