I find myself blowing hot and cold about old GP. If I'm in the mood, I can
get carried away by poor little Cho-Cho-san or thrill to "Vissi d'arte" or
"Nessun dorma." But there are also times when I must confess that the stuff
is ultimately rather silly. Certainly there are no profound truths about
life there.
I think the divide between Puccini-lovers and -haters may be whether you
enjoy music pumped full of gobs of pure feeling. A lot of people never do,
and they are perfectly fine people--more power to them. Others, like me,
sometimes go for it and sometimes not.
