I believe I also I heard a fantastic Shosty 6th on EMI, coupled with a
riveting Rachmaninov 3rd Symphony.
To add to Mr Duggan's list, I must say that Previn is one of my favourite
Prokofiev conductors -- as it is, he has recorded very fine accounts of
the Romeo & Juliet, Cinderella and the 1st and 5th symphonies. (The more
recent Prokofiev 6th and the Scythian Suite with Philips were rather
disappointing, though.) In addition to that, he was an understanding
collaborator with Kyung Wha Chung, Ashkenazy, Mullova, Gil Shaham, etc.
in the concertos.
As for his work as a pianist, I admire him more for his contributions
in the jazz field rather than the classical, although I still enjoy his
Rachmaninov duos with Ashkenazy, and a sparkling, energetic, youthful
recording of the Mozart "Ah vous dirai-je maman" variations.
