I think Wes is correct. Any poll results I've seen indicate that Baroque
music is less popular than any subsequent time period.
Concerning type of music, lieder seems to be the least popular. On the
surface, that would apear odd since some of the best selling recordings are
vocal; however, those are usually big-name productions. Lieder may be the
least popular for two reasons that come to mind: the "texts" are crucial
for an appreciation of the songs, and so much of this repertoire involves
relatively "melancholy" themes and music. The general classical music
population is not high on "text reading" and gloom and doom.
