Anthony G Morris gave us an interesting list of Salzburg broadcasts but I
did not think that anyone expressed any doubt that there are good things
happening in Salzburg? The list of broadcasts indicates that I, for one,
regret greatly that neither Austrian Radio/ORF nor TV are to be found on
the EU satellite systems?
But one of us seems to have slightly misunderstood. I thought the issue
about Whither Salzburg? was to do with Mortier having introduced far too
many (unpleasant) modern works at a totally unacceptable price structure
and that notwithstanding this he had failed to drive away the audiences
capable of paying these totally absurd prices.
My reference to "Berio, Birtwistle and other B***s" was no more than
alliteration to make a point namely that I am not prepared to pay $500 to
hear some dreadful work surrounded by Austrian high society who, to protect
themselves, are all probably fast asleep.
Nicholas Snowman at Glyndebourne is planning some dreadful things for the
next century and as a Society member I can foresee some problems there.
I shall be hard put to find anyone to come down to Sussex with me (the
family won't come, that's certain) and whilst I go always to any unknown
or "strange" opera in London, and other capitals, I will not be prepared
to travel alone to Sussex to suffer the assaults of some of the intended
composers Snowman has in mind. I think they are in for some unpleasant
shocks when these tickets go on sale. But that's another subject.
