Perhaps I'm opening up an old topic...
Very often when Naxos cd:s are reviewed in Gramophone the review ends with
a recommendation to buy it since it is so cheap (well, it has to be fairly
good aswell). But I hesitate anyway. Even if my financial resourses are
limited and that could be a good enough reason to buy it, the time I can
spend listening to music is also limited. If a buy a Cd it takes a couple
of hours listening to get to know it. I have to ask my myselt if it is
worth it.
Since quite a few members on the list listed Naxos a favourite label, I
hope that you can give me exampels of really good Naxos CD, CD:s that
does't sound budget label but can hold up to comparision with major
full-price releases.
I don't want to sound negitive towards Naxos since it is cheap and
sometimes reliable way to expand your collection.(I alredy have a couple
of good Naxos CD, Messian Vingt regards..., Charpentier, but on the other
hand I found Jandos Beethoven and Schubert very straightforward and
unimaginative). It is really good that they are out there, they put a
lot of pressure on the major labels. During the last couple of months I
have found lost of good CD:s from major labels on sale. I friend of mine
working in the best store for classical music in Goteborg told me that it
looks like the are finally realizing the impact of Naxos and other budget
labels.
So, list-friends. I would really appreciate if you could help me picking
out the gems on Naxos.
