When people complain of various hi-jinks being used to make money in the
"sacred" name of classical music, I always think of the famous Beethoven
concert at which the violinist (who was it? I don't remember) entertained
by playing the instrument upside down.

Since this was a time when such concerts for the general public were rather
new, it was probably thought necessary to attract audiences by such means.
Nothing new under the sun.
