Not as brooding or melancholy, but I could suggest Bax's "Tintagel"
and "November Woods", Alfven's "Legend of the Skerries", Stenhammar's
"Midvinter", and Rautavaara's "Cantus Arcticus", among others.

Of course, there is also Sibelius's Symphony #4, "Tapiola", "Kullervo",
and the rest of the "Four Legends".
