and goes on to list his ten.  I must say I wish I could provide a list
of even the five greatest recordings of the century, but wouldn't that
assume that I had heard most of the recordings of the century to make my
list worth anything at all? For example, I always listen to Deryk Barker's
Mahler, Bruckner, Sibelius, and Eroica recommendations, because he's heard
not only what I've heard, but so much more.  I've heard only four of the
recordings on Wilson's list, for example.  I'd be interested to know what
the Gramophone editors come up with, since I'm sure they've also heard more
recordings than I.

I'd be more comfortable listing 10 greatest recordings of the 19th century
- not as wide a field to cover.
