David Stewart is looking for recommendations, preferably from males (only
kidding); he wants all-male singers. I'm not aware of any, but I'm sure
there must be. The best St. Matthew I know of is the Herreweghe on
Harmonia Mundi.
Concerning Gardiner, his version won a Gramophone award. However, I don't
think he did as well as on his recording of the Christmas Oratorio. It's
still good, though.
"That Japanese guy" is named Suzuki; I don't think he's recorded the St.
Matthew yet.
If you want a change of pace, try out the version arranged by Mendelssohn;
it's on Opus 111 and directed by a great conductor who's underrated -
Spering. It's not a "first" version to own, but it fits on 2 cd's.
Other good versions include Veldhoven on Channel Classics, Koopman on Erato,
and Max on Cappricio. Some folks swear by the Klemperer on
EMI or the Leonhardt on DHM.
The work is a masterpiece, so buy a few versions.
