At the time, Wagner had two projects in mind: a biographical opera, and
an opera based on mythology.  The latter evolved into the Ring Cycle.
The other? Would have been an opera based on Jesus of Nazareth.

So count your blessings. Instead of the Ring, we could be listening to
Wagner's version of "Jesus Christ, Superstar".
