Levin/Gardiner are excellent performances. Prior to hearing them, my
favorite period instrument set was Tan/Norrington. Although I would still
take Tan for the Choral Fantasy, Levin is better in the concertos. Also,
the newer set has reaped some superlative reviews, particularly for Levin's
interpretations. I don't mean to depreciate Gardiner's contributions; he
is very good. But, it's Levin who makes the recordings special.
Being currently obsessed some with the Beethoven piano concertos, a
thread like this one is a pleasure. I would also point Tore toward the
List Archives where there are many threads about the concerto recordings.
Believe it or not, I just recently, for the first time, actually went into
these archives; I've told you folks I have a relatively narrow focus.
Anyways, there's all kinds of good stuff in there. There's even an
"authors" section where you see how many postings have been made by each
poster. I was embarrassed when I went through it; I thought I posted
infrequently but with high quality. Now I find out it's the opposite.
Not quite, but I sure am too harsh sometimes. I thank Dave for, in effect,
telling me not to bother folks when I want info. that readily available
through the Archives.
