David Stewart asks:

>>What makes a good tune?

And Steve Schwartz replies

>It's a mystery.

There's no doubt a good deal of mystery to it, but also aspects that are
obvious. Some symphonic tunes or operatic arias have become associated
with certain occasions: Beethoven's great funeral marches with times of
national mourning, Verdi's drinking songs with joyous occasions, and
Mendelssohn's wedding march with better times. This association has
brought them to the fore of one's musical memory, made them hummable.
Schubert's chamber pieces play to the lazy chord, Rossini to the busy
one. It's a matter for psychologists, really.
