The discrimination against women in composer and music history has been
existing for quite a long time. Tradition may be one of the most important
reasons, in Mozart or earlier period, composer was regarded as a service
and inferior career. They were treated as servents (Mozart and Bach are
all good examples). Aristocrat women never have chance and intention to
be composers although most of them could play one or more instruments.
The target of education for women is how to find a good husband.
Playing instruments were regarded as one important part of women education
but not composing (who cares). In 19th and later Composer was still
regarded as a career for male, women don chance to be involved. The
discrimination against women in this field has been tradition even till
now. Bear in mind that Equality and anti-discrimination just has less than
100 years history, but only within the short period, women are becoming
more and more aggressive, creative and successful. Since they can be
successful in writing, instrument playing (cello, piano, harp, drum,
violin, etc.), business, design why can't they be successful on composing
in the future, most probably after four hundred years, the best 20 or more
composers on board will be female. Other reasons why male composers take
overwhelming superiority should have more to do with, logic, thinking,
emotion, psychology, memory this may need a special study.
