Ian Crisp replies to my not calling Shostakovich's Symphony No. 15 an
"autumnal work":
>And Janacek's Sinfonietta and Glagolitic Mass, to pick just one other
>composer from the list, are "autumnal" works? I must visit New Orleans
>sometime soon, before the climate changes. Autumns over there must be
>very different from the kind I'm used to in England.
Actually, New Orleans autumns are pretty raw - bitingly cold and wet. The
summers aren't much drier, but the heat *can* poleax you.
I hear a certain amount of "nostalgia" in both works, despite their blazing
endings (and beginnings). I guess that's what made me say what I did.
Or maybe I just forgot at that point the "autumnal" criterion.
