After a number of delays, I finally got my much-anticipated CD of
Bernstein's Sony version of Harold in Italy to replace my 35-year-old LP.
I was delighted by the quality of the remastering and just wallowed in
Lenny's wonderful conducting and being reminded for the nth time what a
fabulous original Berlioz was. But there was something new - near the
beginning of the third movement, I suddenly made a connection with Mahler,
as in Ging heut' Morgen. Later in the movement, I kept getting little
touches of Mahler in some of the harmonies. I plan to listen again today
but I thought I'd throw it into the MCML melting pot. Comments, anyone?
