Sometimes the soloist is supposed to be submerged in the Schumann piano
concerto. For about a week I've been listening to the first two concertos
by Lowell Liberman--great neo-romantic concertos, big tunes and all. He
often exploits the use of the piano as a background instrument (as does
Ravel at the beginning of the Concerto in G).
