The pulitzer prize for music, from this view, is stodgy, stolid and
relfects what old men think of what music is about. There was no single
year award for Miles Davis, Coltrane, Mingus or Ellington while they lived.
Only in this most recent run of jazz or jazz tinged works have we seen the
last of these finally get a very posthumus "lifetime achievement" award.
It ends up underlining a basic point, no award in music has had a really
good track record.
