It seems to me that it is always easy to start with the last three sonatas,
i.e., D.958, D.959, and the monumental D.960., assuming that you are
certainly familiar with Beethoven's late piano sonatas.

We can choose a wide variety of performances in terms of interpretation
for these works, but I would recommend Mitsuko Uchida's new recordings
on Philips.  These are beautifully recorded and of course musically very
interesting (I do not mean it's idiosyncratic).  Brendel's recordings on
Philips is also a very good choice (and they're very cheap now).

Other popular sonatas are: D.664, D.784, D.840, D.845, D850, and D.894
"Fantasy".
