I just bought at the drugstore chain Het Kruidvat in Holland:
Mendelssohn's Paulus complete, conducted by Helmuth Rilling, previously
issued in 1994 and Bach's Hohe Messe complete, conducted by Karl-Friedrich
Beringer, of which I only have heard the Quoniam by Thomas Quasthoff.
The price of these four CDs together was just that of one Naxos CD. I
count my blessings, but am wondering how long music stores will survive if
we get used to paying only 8% of the usual price of a full-price CD for
quality recordings.
EMI hit back last month by offering all Beethoven piano sonatas played by
Daniel Barenboim on 10 CDs for a total price of two Naxos CD's.
I may end up buying a huge amount of CDs without ever finding the time for
listening.
