In my previous posting I neglected to mention Pollini's recordings on DG.
His two-disc set of Beethoven's last five piano sonatas is outstanding; his
other discs, while not as excellent, outdistance most of the competition.
Some list members have advocated Goode on Nonesuch. I find him a
thorough professional of good taste and technique. However, I don't feel
any "magic" when listening to his Beethoven. Ditto for his Mozart and
Schubert. The other night I was listening to his recording of Schubert's
sonata,D.959. I really enjoyed it. Then, I put on Brendel's earlier
Philips recording. It was a world of difference going from Goode playing
Schubert to what seemed like Don playing Schubert if he had the chops.
