There is another way of looking at one Schumann piece, albeit an early
one.  George Balanchine choreographed the Davidsbundlertanze, and a
performance of this, a magnificent one, is available on video.  Here you
get to see what one genius, 140 or so years later, did with the work of
another genius.  It was one of Balanchine's last works, and there are
themes relating to Robert's relationship with Clara, his madness, and
perhaps Balanchine's own mortality.  It is a stunning experience to watch.
Afterwards, you may be perplexed trying to decide whose genius is foremost
where.  But the experience is worth the perplexity.  Highest
