We can all join Mary in being saddened by the passing of
Malcolm Watkins. Fortunately the SHA recognized Watkins with an
SHA Award of Merit (at the suggestion of Mary Beaudry, by the
way) at its annual meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio (1996). Watkins was
an impressive scholar and a real gentleman as a colleague even to
those of us who were not of his generation and who only came to know
him later and indirectly. His passing is a great loss to our discipline
and to general scholarship.

                                   Chair
                                   SHA Awards Committee
