Them falsetto swoops is BW himself - I thought the swipe at his voice
unnecessary too, because whatever its state today, in the 60s Brian's
falsetto was an essential part of the BB sound.

Indeed.  There is a rather sad story connected with this song.  One time
during the early 70s, I imagine it was, Paul McCartney was in LA and called
round to see Brian.  Unfortunately, BW had read McCartney's stated belief
that God Only KNows was the greatest pop song ever written.

Consequently, when McCartney rang at the door of Wilson's house there
was no reply, although he fancied he heard, coming from inside, the
sound of a man sobbing....
