I remember years and years ago Danny Kaye conducting (I believe the N.Y.
Phil.) in a movement from a major symphonic work.  (Wm.  Tell Overture I
believe).  Anyway, he was hilarious.  He would cue the tympani with a leg
kick, and cue in other sections with appropriate baton "english".  He was
very good.  His beat was easy to follow.  Perhaps Sir John helped him out.
