Happy Robert Volkmann's birthday, all! (thanks largely to cpo, though
to some other labels as well, it's now possible to hear a lot of Robert
Volkmann's substantial output, including 2 symphonies, 6 string quartets,
2 piano trios, a concerto and concertstuck, several orchestral works, 3
serenades, piano music, and other things. The music, aside from its- to
my ears considerable- intrinsic worth, had some historical note for its
influence on Tchaikovsky. Not as noteworthy a birthday as those of Haydn,
Bartok, d'Indy, and Roussel, so recently celebrated, but worth more than
passing attention- especially the string quartets.)
