Viktor Ullmann was probably the finest of the "Theresianstadt" or "Terezin"
composers. Terezin was a "model" concentration camp in which the Nazis
encouraged the inmates to compose and perform music etc in an effort to
buffalo the outside press in to believing that the Jews were getting a
fair treatment. As soon as the Red Cross or whomever was toured around
and placated, the Jews were sent off to Auschwicz or Dachau. Many artists
writers and composers were interred there temporarily in an offort to keep
up the front. Other compsers from this era include Paavel Haas. I have
always admired Ullmann's work. If you want to find out more, consider
reading the excellent book by Josza Karas entitled "Music in Terezin".
He is a professor in Delaware and a delightful man!
