In case this might give rise to some threads or points of discussion last
night I gave a recorded recital for a local charity before an audience of
about 105 people. A three course dinner was served in the interval and
about USD 750 was raised. Equipment used included large KEFs and Quad
amps.

The play list was:

Massenet: Aubade (from Le Cid)/ CBSO, Fremaux (EMI)
Caballe: El Rey que rabio "Mi tio se figura" (BMG)
Binge: Las Castanuelas/ Slovak RSO, Tomlinson (Marco Polo)
Mozart: "O Calpe!" Blochwitz/Munich Radio/Weigle (Philips)
Arriaga: Sym.1 (Minuet)/ Capella Reial de Catalunya/Jordi Savall (Valois)
Giordano: "Mi svesti" from La Cena delle beffe <Supper of Jests> Cortis
(Nimbus)
Adam: Overture "Le Toreador" - WNO/Bonynge (Decca)
Mozart: Don Giovanni "Madamina" Taddei/PO/Giulini (EMI)
Moszkowski: Spanish Dance No.1/ LSO, Argenta (Decca)
Wagner: Parsifal part of end Act 1/ Bayreuth, Levine (Philips)

Shostakovich: Moscow-Cheryomushki("Spin thru' Moscow")/ Philadelphia/
Chailly (Decca)
Canteloube: Chansons des Pays Basques <Egun Batean>/ Maria Bayo (Valois)
Falla: Tricorne (Final Dance) Philharmonia/ Giulini (EMI)
Cole Porter: "Waltz down the aisle" F. von Stade/ LSO/ McGlinn (EMI)
Alonso: La Parranda "Canto a Murcia"/ Domingo/ Moreno-Buendia (EMI)
Granados: Goyescas "Intermezzo" Philharmonia/Karajan (EMI)
Verdi: La Forza del destino (Overture) / RPO, Gardelli (EMI)
Catalani: La Wally "Ebben? ne andro lontana" Callas/PO/ Serafin (EMI)
Verdi: Don Carlos: Ella giammai m'amo/ Christoff/Santini (DG)
Arlen: Over the Rainbow/ Stormy weather - Sylvia McNair/Previn (Philips)

With the exception of 4 items the programme had a Spanish thread and was
"local" in so far as Cortis lived in the neighbouring town of Denia (where
there is a square named after him), Calpe is the massive rock overshadowing
the town of Calpe just down the coast from here and Murcia lies a bit
further to the south (south of Alicante).

The 'hit' of the evening? - the aria sung by Antonio Cortis (known as
The Spanish Caruso), recorded 1927, and who, today, is almost totally
forgotten. He enjoyed a huge career in Chicago in the 1920/30 period. In
recent weeks I have seen references to Cortis' aria "Mi svesti" as being
one of the top 10 greatest arias ever committed to disc. The recordings
were made for Victor (and some others for HMV).
