Well, maybe I shall give hints of my own opinion about this later, but for
listers who can read French, a remarkable book about this is

La Singularite Schoenberg, by Francois Nicolas
(Editions Ircam - L'Harmattan, Paris)

Francois Nicolas is a composer himself, and well-known to anybody familiar
with the Ircam or the Entretemps Editions.
