The Center for Archaeological Studies at Montclair State University
Archaeology Field School has an opening for a Field Assistant position.

LOGISTICS:
The dates of employment are June 23 to July 23, 1999, with a possibility of
future opportunities. The successful candidate will be paid in fixed
salary and be expected to work at least 40 hours per week for the duration
of the field school. The field school will operate from 9am to 5pm, Monday
through Friday, from June 28, 1999 to July 23, 1999. From June 23 - June
25, the successful applicant should be available to help principal staff
members with set up duties and to be given an orientation to the project.
The applicant must provide their own housing arrangements for the duration
of the project, but we may be able to help with these arrangements. Direct
all questions regarding payment and housing to Matt Tomaso
([log in to unmask]).

PLACES:
National Register of Historic Places District of Feltville /Glenside Park,
a Union County Park, and Montclair State University, Upper Montclair, NJ.
1999 will be our third season at Feltville/Glenside Park. Feltville is a
National and State Register Historic District and includes the cultural
remains related to a late 19th century resort, a mid 19th century planned
industrial village, an 18th century farm, and Native American habitation.
Building on previous field work, this season will focus on structural and
other remains from the mid-19th century and earlier, including a recently
discovered Native American site. Staff supervised student activities will
include a full range of archaeological techniques from transit mapping to
ground penetrating radar to controlled excavation and archival research.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The successful applicant will assist the Field School Coordinator (me) with
project supervision, labor and, possibly, instruction of small student
teams in one or more specific areas of the Historic District. One of these
areas involves a low density, recently identified, Native American site
which may date to the Late Woodland or Contact Period but is poorly
understood at present. Other probable work areas include 19th and,
probably, 18th century foundations, middens and industrial locations. The
projects that the assistant will work on will depend on the over-arching
needs of the Feltville Archaeological Project and, less importantly, on the
applicant's abilities.

REQUIREMENTS:
Field experience is a must - the applicant must have _at_least_ one full
year (i.e. four field seasons) of experience in professionally conducted
contract or academic field archaeology projects, preferably both. The
applicant must have demonstrated skills in survey and mapping, excavation,
grid systems, and testing. The successful candidate will have, at least, a
B.A. or B.S. in archaeology or a closely related field. Although the
applicant should feel comfortable with his/her ability to teach field
techniques to both undergraduates and graduate students, formal teaching
experience is not necessary. Teaching experience and some familiarity with
field geomorphology or geoarchaeology, of course, will be highly
advantageous, as will be a general familiarity with and/or interest in
northeastern prehistory and/or history.
