The Center for Archaeological Studies at Montclair State University will be
conducting its 1999 Summer Archaeology Field School at the National and
State Register of Historic Places District of Feltville / Glenside Park, in
the Watchung Mountains of central New Jersey.

Feltville, also known as 'the abandoned village', was founded in 1845 by
David Felt as a planned industrial community focused on the production of
books. Since its establishment, Feltville has undergone several major
changes which are tied to regional and local economic and social changes.
In the late 19th century, it was a country resort known as Glenside Park.
Later, it became a home to several families who lost their property in the
great depression. Today, nine structures from the 19th century are
intact, and no buildings at the site post-date the 1880s. Currently,
Feltville is being developed into an historic park by the Union County
Division of Parks and Recreation. A Native American site of undetermined
age has also been located on the property and documentary evidence reflects
early settlement during the 18th century.

Building on two previous years of research at Feltville, CFAS staff and
students will examine aspects of the community's history which are not well
documented in historic literature, with special attention to the mid-19th
century and earlier.

Our field school offers intensive, hands-on experience in both historical
and prehistoric archaeology. We maintain a maximum staff/student ratio of
1/5, and provide a wide range of important learning experiences in the
areas of excavation, survey, documentation and geoarchaeology. Students
may also choose to participate in archival research related to the project.

MSU's field school offers six credits of transferable undergraduate or
graduate credit as well as continuing education units (CEUs: non-credit,
less expensive option, primarily for non-majors) for the full four week
course (June 28 - July 23, 1999), or three credits or CEUs for the two week
option.

Visit the link below for more information. You may also download all but
one of the forms required for admission from our web site. Phone calls or
any other contact from prospective participants are welcome.
