Earlier this evening I had the pleasure of being treated by Channel Four
of the Bavarian Radio to the fourth installment of Maazel's Bruckner cycle
+ Perehia playing a semicycle of Mozart's eight latest concertos. In the
previous three installments Perahia had consistently turned in excellent
performance, while Maazel/ Bavarian Radio Symphony had been merely dutiful.
But tonight was different. Doing Bruckner's Third (ultimate version)
Maazel and the orchestra finally hit their stride. Result: an impeccable
performance--up there with the best of my experience. Perahia, doing
Mozart's 23rd piano concerto was again right up there. His performances,
so far at least, are beginning to justify notability in the very rich field
of other performances that are available on cd. Mind you, Perahia, as
ever, came across as _sensible_ as well as a sensitive player. His key
of playing was restrained, though also cordial. The technique was was
outstanding.
