Very often the use rhythmic ostinati is associated with
mystical/incantatory utterances.  Xenakis acknowledges this fact in
his "Musiques Formelles." One of the most impressive (and controversial)
examples is the Gorecki 3rd Symphony.  Among those whose rhythmic ostinati
are hypnotic but not mystical by any means are Ravel's "Bolero" and Orff's
"Carmina Burana."
