Donald Runnicles, SFO's music director and one of the finest conductors
around in a range that stretches from `Peleas' to the `Ring,' is conducting
`Werther' on the Saturday Met broadcast.  While I am sure he'll be fine, I
am scratching my head about the assignment by the Met.  Surely, this is the
first time they mismatch work and artist!

My other fave `local conductor,' Michael Tilson Thomas, is on a tour of
Europe through Feb.  9, and if list members see press coverage of the
concerts, I'd appreciate private mail with the Web address.  Thanks.
