The Toscanini memory story that I've heard the most often comes from his
conducting debut in Brazil where he filled in for a Brazilian conductor
who wasn't getting along with the Italian orchestra.  Infuriated by the
catcalls he was getting as he went to the podium he slammed the score shut
and conducted "Aida" from memory.
