Just a related anecdote. I was present at Berman's NYC debut at the 92nd
St. Y. Due to a blizzard, his Steinway could not be delivered and he had
to make do with the "house" instrument. He nearly succeeded in breaking it
during the double octave passage of the Liszt Sonata. I've never seen that
passage taken at such a clip in at least 25 performances of the work I've
seen since. He finished the program with the Rhapsodie Espagnole, a
spectacular performance.
