Having hear the Levin/Gardner recordings of the Emperor concerto I must
agree with Don's assesment that Levin is outstanding and Gardiner is OK
here--he just doesn't make the accompaniment soar the way that Norrington
and any number of non-HIP conductors (Alceo Galliera comes to mind) do.
A few weeks ago I heart the first two Beethoven concertos with Immerseel
and Tafelmusik. Apart from some heavy leaning on downbeats it is quite
good.
