I remember reading in a text from the 40s describing Tchaikowsky's
marrying a groupie out of a misplaced attempt at gallantry brought on by
guilt feelings while writing Tatiana's "Letter Scene" in *Eugene Onegin*
that Tchaikowsky was "emotionally unequipped for marriage." (The marriage
was disasterous from the outset and was terminated, I assume by annulment,
within days.)
